The coalition came in order to fill the gap that already exists in the queer community in Morocco, in which there’s a strong need for a creation of a coalition between national LGBTI organizations in Morocco.
The three organizations capitalize on a common vision for a positive change and improvement of the life of the LGBTIQ+ community in Morocco. “We are stronger when united”, thus the three platforms decided to gather their strengths to amplify and maximize the impact of our work and start operating through common actions in short, mid and long term.
The coalition is formed by the 3 following organisations:
Rainbow Doctors: is a network of LGBTI doctors and med-students in Morocco.
Trans-Atlas: is an LGBTIQ+ grassroots organization made of mostly trans, non-binary and gender non conforming people, the focus of the group’s work will be with the LGBTIQ+ community over remote and rural areas in Morocco in which the queer community don’t tend to benefit from the different queer dynamics in the country. The organization aims to raise awareness and make sure that the voices of the queer community living in remote areas are expressed and heard.
Equality Morocco: is an independent NGO, that was created in 2018 which aims to contribute, through a peaceful commitment to the fight against discrimination based on gender and sexuality at the institutional and sociocultural levels in Morocco within a human rights framework. The main fight is against social, cultural, and institutional LGBTIphobia.
The aim of the Coalisition in Morocco:
- Create a synergy and a solidarity between the 3 LGBTIQ+ organizations
- Make the organizations stronger facing in our mechanisms of fighting the different forms of LGBTIQphobia
- Establish a joint process of advocacy using national and international human rights mechanisms
- Establish a dynamic of positive change discourse and actions of the Moroccan civil society
Objectives of the initiative:
- Strengthening the capacity of members and LGBTIQ+ activists from partner organizations and the creation of a sense of community among LGBTIQ+ people.
- Conduct research for a better understanding of the LGBTIQ+ issues;
- Creating a safe space for LGBTIQ + people in Morocco.
- Raising awareness about the perception of LGBTIQ+ people
- Raising society’s awareness of the acceptance of LGBTI people as full citizens.
